The Oberoi Udaivilas
Udaipur
Oberoi Udaivilas has one of Ampersand's Top 10 Swimming Pools
Built on the shores of Udaipur's Lake Pichola with views over the iconic Lake Palace and the beautiful City Palace, this opulent and expansive hotel has been designed along the lines of a Merwari Palace.
Designed by Asia’s top luxury hotel designer Bill Bensley, this hotel is quite possibly his finest creation; pared back, elegant and chic, endless domes, turrets, fountains and reflection pools feature regularly throughout the property and the beautifully bright and airy bedrooms and suites are amongst the most comfortable in the country. There are a number to choose between, but for the best views over the lake, we would recommend those with semi-private or private pools for a particularly comfortable stay (Wi-fi is complementary in all rooms and public spaces). The other rooms are tucked away amongst the grounds and whilst the rooms are incredibly private and beautifully appointed, there isn’t quite the same sense of location as there is at the Lake Palace.
A highlight of this hotel that is simply not to be missed during your stay here is the knock-out pool, which gently weaves its way around the contours of the palatial architecture and looks out onto the scenic lake and perfectly manicured gardens. After taking a refreshing dip in the bright aqua blue water, we highly recommend reclining on a daybed under the shade of a signature Oberoi tasselled parasol with a cocktail in hand – just bliss after a day sightseeing in the city.
Delicate murals in Oberoi’s signature blue and pink bougainvillea also provide pops of colour around the grounds and decorate the surroundings, lending a sense of elegance. This sophisticated atmosphere can also be felt right on arrival as you enter into the grand and welcoming lobby. To complete this luxurious experience, take part in a calming yoga session, pamper yourself by visiting the indulgent spa - which offers striking views over the lake - or enjoy the well-equipped gym if you are in need of a more active way to recharge.
Home to three restaurants, guests at The Oberoi Udaivilas are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining. A variety of classical Indian and Western cuisine is served at Udaimahal, Suryamahal and Chandni, and can also be enjoyed on the more exclusive dining arrangements, which include lunch on-board a boat on Lake Pichola and a candle-lit private dinner underneath a romantic dome on the side of the lake.
The service is unsurpassed, typical for the Oberoi brand, and the friendly staff are always willing to help in any way that they can and provide special touches to treat guests staying here.
To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.
